On June 9, Manabi Bandopadhyay will take charge as the new principal of Women’s College in West Bengal.

Principal taking the charge is not always news but it’s good news when the principal is a transgender. You read it right: India’s first trangender college principal will be Manabi. Currently, she is associate professor in Bengali at Vivekananda Satobarshiki Mahavidyalaya.

“This decision was taken by the College Service Commission. I don’t interfere in their decisions. They are aware of our open mind. I am happy with this decision,” state Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said while appreciating the decision.

He stated that he doesn’t interfere in decisions of the college committees and is happy for the open-minded approach of the college.

Technical education minister Ujjal Biswas, who is also the chairman of the college governing body, also welcomed the move. He simply said they were looking for an impressive and strong personality for the post of the principal to run the college smoothly.

Rattan Lal Hangloo, Vice-Chancellor of Kalyani University to which the College is affiliated, also welcomed the decision. He said Manabi is a good academician and administrator. He also showed his hope for the empowerment of the transgender community.

Well, Khurki also appreciates this decision of the Women’s College and welcomes Manabi Bandopadhyay and the modern education system in the country.
