Eight killed in Mandi, Nahan accidents

Shimla, July 5: As many as eight persons were killed in two accidents in Mandi and Sirmaur districts On Wednesday. Three persons were killed on the spot and two on way to hospital when the bus they were travelling in rolled down a deep gorge at Janjehli in Mandi on Wednesday. According to official sources, the bus was booked for a marriage party.

Around 25 persons were on board at the time of the accident which took place around 5:40 pm at Bajao Mod.The driver lost control of the vehicle and it rolled down 200-foot gorge. A number of victims died on spot while many received grievous injuries. Hitesh Lakhanpal, DSP, Mandi, said a police team had been sent to the spot and rescue operation was going on. As many as 15 persons had been rescued from the area and admitted to nearby hospitals at Bagsyad and Janjehli.“

One minor girl, trapped under the bus, was rescued,” he added. According to the DSP, the driver died on the spot, while three women and one child were among the victims. DC, Mandi, Sandeep Kadam, said with the help of ambulance service, victims had been shifted to nearby hospitals, while critically injured would be shifted to Zonal Hospital, Mandi. He added that the compensation to the victims would be provided.

The cause of accident is yet to be ascertained and the police were investigating the case. The deceased have been identified as Layak Ram, Hima Devi, Meena Devi, Arshpal Rana and Nirmla Devi, all natives of Mandi district.ADM Rajiv Kumar disbursed Rs 10,000 to the family of each victim and Rs 5,000 to the injured.

Solan: Three persons were killed and two others seriously injured when the car they were travelling in rammed into a tree near Kyarda village on the Nahan-Paonta Sahib national highway on Wednesday. While two persons were killed on the spot, another one died on way to hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Nafeez Ahmad (52), Bahaar Ahmas (46) and Abdul Khalid (80).The occupants were natives of Saharanpur (in Uttar Pradesh) who were on their way to Paonta Sahib from Nahan when the mishap took place.They were all labourers and had come there for fishing as fishing equipment was also recovered from them. The injured are receiving treatment at the Paonta Sahib Civil Hospital. Sirmaur SP Souyma Sambasivan said the police were investigating the case.
