TCS Techie Murder: Convict Sentenced to Death

If only justice be granted this soon it may prove to be a deterrent for others! Keep up the good work!

Chandrabhan Sanap, convicted for the rape and murder of a young TCS techie¬†Esther Anuhya in Mumbai last year, was sentenced to death today by a court which dubbed the case as the ‘rarest of rare’.

Sanap was spotted on CCTV footage walking with Ms Anuhya, 23, before she went missing on January 5, 2014 from a station near Mumbai. The decomposed and burnt body of the woman, who was working with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), was found 11 days later, in a swamp near a major highway on the outskirts of Mumbai.

“The case falls under the category of the rarest of rare, hence the accused is awarded death sentence…he must be hanged by his neck till he is dead,” said Special Women’s court judge Vrushali Joshi pronouncing the verdict.

Sanap, who has a criminal record, had come to the Kurla station with an intent to rob after a long night of drinking. He spotted Esther, who had just arrived from Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh after spending the Christmas break with her family, and allegedly offered to take her to her home in Andheri, Mumbai, for Rs. 300. But when they went to the parking lot, Esther realized that the man did not have an autorickshaw or a taxi, just a motorcycle.

When she resisted, Sanap allegedly persuaded her to get on the bike. She reportedly had no airtime left on her phone and pretended to make a few calls as she felt nervous.

He allegedly took her off the road, beat her, bashed her head in with a stone and strangled her before running away with her suitcase. He allegedly called the friend whose motorcycle he had borrowed and blurted out his crime.

Later, he allegedly returned to Nashik, dragging Esther’s bag that he gave away to a beggar. The bag was recovered by the police later.
