Click “Next” to Start…

The Censor Board of India is like that old man who refuses to try anything new from the menu. He has a standing order and any waitress who refuses to serve him that, gets sacked. Over the years the Board has banned many movies in India. And the irony of the matter is that most of these banned movies have gone up to be big blockbusters abroad.

Sins – 2005

The story of the movie featured a priest from Kerala, who falls in love. The movie was high on lust and the struggle that he faces in his mind. The Catholics in our country got uneasy and the movie got banned. Directed and produced by Vinod Pande, the movie had Shiney Ahuja playing the Catholic priest.

Water – 2005

Deepa Mehta has had many tiffs with the Censor Board. Water was set on the life of a widow who lives in an ashram. Not many know that the movie was written by Anurag Kashyap. The sets of the movie were attacked and the movie got banned. The film is also the third and final instalment of Mehta’s Elements trilogy. It was preceded by Fire (1996) and Earth (1998).

Firaaq – 2008

The movie was based on the riots in Gujarat and that was the reason it got banned. The truth really struggles to come out in this country. The movie director Nandita Das too was criticized by the fanatics.

Gandu – 2010

The name of the movie got all the bad responses to start off. It was in fact a musical with a rap. The Censor Board felt that the audiences were still not ready for this format in black and white.

Inshallah – 2010

The central character of the movie was a boy from Kashmir who wanted to become a footballer. Since the movie rightly displayed the struggles of the Kashmiri youth, it got banned.
