Shimla, Sep 20: Himachal Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh on Tuesday stressed on strengthening of primary schools and starting pre-nursery classes within primary schools in the State.

The Department of Education should identify such primary schools at all district headquarters and at sub divisional levels where pre-nursery classes could be started, said the Chief Minister while presiding over the 4th Governing Council meeting of Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Rashtriya Madhayamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) here.

To begin with, it should be launched in few selected schools, he said.

Virbhadra Singh said that assessment of primary education system was need of the hour and the Government was mulling to appoint one teacher each for all classes depending upon the strength of the students in such primary schools. This will facilitate better education to the children and the teachers will get ample time to devote to a single class, said he.

The primary schools would only be opened in case of need and requirement, said the Chief Minister, adding that enough schools had been opened and now there was need to strengthen and rationalise them.

Virbhadra Singh said that teaching should not be taken merely as a profession but as a mission.  Teachers should devote more time for children studying in primary schools, added he.

The Chief Minister lauded PRERNA and PRAYAS schemes for systematic reforms in education to improve quality and learning level of education. The State Government is committed to provide quality education at the door step of every student and has opened as many as 54 colleges during the last almost five years of its regime, said he.

The total strength of colleges has reached to 132 which are notified and two more colleges would be notified soon, added he.

The Chief Minister also distributed ‘Swachtta Award’ to 34 schools for maintaining cleanliness in their institutions.

During the meeting, a presentation on good practices was given by SDM Nalagarh, Ashutosh Garg. He said that as many as 62 students of XI and XII of  selected 16 Government schools of Nalagarh were being given week-end coaching for engineering and medical entrance examinations  sponsored by Indag Rubber Ltd.

The children selected were those who have minimum resource to pursue expensive coaching, he added.
