Somesh Goyal appointed new DGP of Himachal Pradesh

Shimla, July 6: Himachal Pradesh government appointed Somesh Goyal, a 1984-batch IPS officer, as the new director general of police (DGP), after Sanjay Kumar was relieved to take charge as Director General of National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) .

The senior most police officer in Himachal Pradesh, Goyal was earlier posted as the director general of police, prisons and correctional services. He has initiated a number of welfare schemes for prisoners.

Goyal is a trained commando—he was adjudged the best trainee commando—and has worked with National Security Guard (the Black Cats). He has also trained the Special Protection Group responsible for the security of the Prime Minister. On deputation with Border Security Force, he served in Kashmir and West Bengal as DIG and Inspector General, respectively. He was also a member of the Service Selection Board in Kashmir and Naxal-hit areas such as Chhattisgarh and Bihar.

Goyal is a recipient of the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Services. Some of the other honors bestowed on him include Kathin Sewa Medal, High Altitude Medal, Internal Security Medal and Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

He has also served with Himachal Pradesh Road Transport Corporation and General Industries Corporation.

Goyal has held many sensitive posts in departments like CID, Armed Police training and vigilance during his career. He was promoted as additional director general of police in 2009 and posted as ADG, Headquarters and Armed Police and Training and State Vigilance Bureau.

A postgraduate from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Goyal used to teach at Vaish College, Rohtak, before he joined the Indian Police Service.

The new DGP accentuated upon women safety, tackling traffic problems and growing drug menace in the state . “My focus will be on containing cyber crime, crime against woman and traffic problem. Public delivery from Police side will be our main focus,” he said.
