Rain caused losses worth crores in Mandi district this season

Shimla, Aug 9: Rain caused losses worth crores in Mandi district this season by damaging public and private property in different parts of the district. The data received from the district administration revealed that heavy rain had caused a considerable loss to the Public Works Department (PWD), the Irrigation and Public Health (IPH) Department and the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Board (HPSEB) beside 72 houses were reported damaged so far.

The data shows that Rs 92.51 crore loss had occurred to the PWD, Rs 15.53 crore to the IPH and Rs 15.70 lakh to the HPSEB, respectively. Apart from this, 72 houses were damaged partially, which caused a loss of property worth Rs 94.94 lakh, while 87 cowsheds were also reported damaged in various parts of the district causing a loss worth Rs 2.76 crore.The major loss occurred to the PWD Department in Mandi as numbers of roads leading to the villages were damaged because of frequent landslides.

The worst affected were 72 families, who forced to take temporary shelters at another place because their houses were damaged in the rain.Few days ago, six members of a family were trapped under the debris near Sainj when a house collapsed suddenly. They were rescued safely with the help of locals and the district administration.

A few days ago, one person was killed in Mandi on the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway, when a boulder rolled down from a hill side and hit his car. As a result, the victim succumbed to his injuries on the spot. In another incident reported near Hanogi temple, three persons were injured badly.

One youth was washed away in Talyar, when he was taking a bath in a nearby rivulet along with his friends in the area.The weathermen have predicted more rain in the coming days. The district administration has already raised an alarm to the public to remain alert and avoid venturing in to the river side as a majority of rivulet, including the Beas was in spate. Additional District Magistrate Mandi Rajiv Kumar said the authority was assessing the loss occurred due to rain in the district regularly and report to the government.
