That a dip in the holy river Ganga will heal you is not just a myth any more. The fact that Ganga is the most worshiped river around the world also makes it one of the most myth-associated river as well.
As per the Institute of Microbial Technology (Imtech), Chandigarh, the water of river Ganga doesn’t get dirty easily. It has repeatedly shown scientific evidence that it can heal itself. In the research, they identified new viruses or bacteriophages that mimic bacteria in the river’s sediment and eat them up.
The study has revealed 20 to 25 types of bacteriophages in the river which can fight microorganisms that cause diseases like tuberculosis, pneumonia, cholera and urinary tract infection, et al.
The team researched the water from the stretch of Varanasi-Haridwar, which is consider quite polluted. Many other research organisation were also a part of the study such as National Environment Engineering Research Institute co-ordinating lab, Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants & National Botanical Research Institute.
