How To Educate Your Child About Sexual Abuse Early On!

Parents are always hesitant to talk to their children about body safety at an early stage, thinking their kids are too young. Nowadays we allow our kids to go out for play dates or to daycare and pre-school at a very young age. What we are trying to say is that you can’t fully protect your child from being sexually abused; it’s time to make this important conversation with your kids. Here are few ways which you can use to make your child aware about sexual abuse:

6 Name body parts

It is very important to make an early conversation with your child about body parts. Teach them proper names for each body part. By teaching your child the exact names of their body part will help them talk to you clearly if something inappropriate happens with them.

5 Teach about private body parts

It is extremely important to tell your child what their private parts are called and why you refer them as private. Explain them that except mommy and daddy, no one can see them naked. No one is allowed to see them partially or completely without clothes.

4 Teach boundaries

Tell your child clearly that no one should touch their private parts and they should not touch somebody’s private parts if someone asks them to. Sexual abuse usually begins with the perpetrator asking the child to touch them.

3 Fix a code word

As your child gets a little older, give them a code word which they can use when they feel uncomfortable or unsafe with someone in any circumstance or place, so that you can pick them immediately.

2 Teach your child to say ‘No’

Often children don’t know how to get out of situations when they feel scared or uncomfortable. Tell them they can say “NO” if something feels wrong. Teach your child to tell you if someone tries to see or touch their private parts.

1 Tell your child these rules apply for all

It is very crucial to discuss with your child that these rules are for everyone. Tell them none of your friends or any uncle or aunty, not even teachers can touch their private parts.
