Chauthi Koot And Masaan To Compete At Cannes Film Fest

After the lone film last year, Kanu Behl’s Titli, 2015 is better in terms of the number of Indian films that made the cut. This time, two films have made it to the prestigious festival from the 1854 odd submissions. And both figure in the UnCertain Regard category.

Khurki offers you a peek into the two movies that would be vying for recognition at Cannes:

1. Masaan (Fly Away Solo)

Director: Neeraj Ghaywan

The winner of last year’s Sundance Institute/Mahindra Global Filmmaking Award, Masaan is the story of four Varanasi residents trying to get away from the small city grind. Ghaywan who started out as Kashyap’s assistant in Gangs Of Wasseypur has directed an acclaimed short film titled Shor. The film is produced jointly by Manish Mundra’s Drishyam Films, Phantom and international producers Arte Pathe and Macassar.

2. The Fourth Direction (Chauthi Koot)

Director: Gurvinder Singh

Gurvinder Singh, whose first film Annhey Ghorey Da Daan bagged three National Awards, The Fourth Direction is a Punjabi film based around the fears of the Sikh community following the Indira Gandhi assassination in 1984. The film is produced by Sunil Doshi, Catherine Dussard, Kartikeya Narayan Singh and NFDC and is based on Waryam Singh Sandhu’s collection of short stories.

Apart from these two films, Amy, a documentary on the English singer Amy Winehouse’s struggle with fame and mental illness by British-Indian filmmaker Asif Kapadia will also be screened in Midnight Sessions section.
