He was ready to claim his destiny. He got the red rose along with a ring and then drove to the party. It had been three months today, since they had been together.
While he drove, the song came up again. Somehow their favourite song! All the time they had together flashed before his eyes. He just remembered how they both used to sing the song together in their worst pitches. How they both looked into each other’s eyes and how that day he promised himself that this girl would be his destiny. And against all odds, sailing through the toughest times and no matter what, he would do anything to see her happy.
Damn, these memories. How he reached the place thinking about it, he could not believe. He stepped inside the hall. All the time, his eyes were searching for her. Finally, he found her dressed in a yellow gown. He smiled and looked down shyly. He had gifted her this dress. He was so happy to see her in yellow or in his colour of love, who could say? As he paced towards her, he was forced to stop short. She was with someone. He felt as if he had lost his destiny.
Not just someone, it was her past. What is she doing with him? His heart sank. She hugged him. She had her fingers wrapped around him, his ex. The person whom she had loved infinitely, the ex who had changed her, the ex that had made her never to believe in love.
He sighed and closed his eyes. He kept the rose inside the pocket of his coat and wiped a tear away secretly. He then took a glass of wine and came out of the party. And while he sipped the wine slowly and slowly, he tried to reason that he should not have expected that much.
I knew that she would never be able to forget him. But it’s fine. While he rubbed his eyes again and again in anger to stop the tears, he told himself…it’s okay. I love her enough to let her go. I love her and I am happy if she is happy.
What did you say? He turned back only to see her standing there. You love me enough to let me go. What are you doing here? I thought you were in the party with….
Say it, you came out of the party when you saw me with my ex. No, no, I just didn’t want to interrupt. Shut up. What do you think of yourself? Hmm. Had I not seen you going out and had I not seen this, she flashed the ring. What is this? He was stunned. This must have dropped when he was putting the rose back. This is nothing. Give it to me. She pushed him back. I choked! She came to him and then took hold of his coat’s buttons.
I was telling him about us. I told him everything about us and that I love you. I told him that I hold no grudge against him because I am too busy loving you and that destiny has found me my soulmate. And you are talking about leaving me. How could you? When he left, when he had used me for his physical needs, you were there. You had put all the broken pieces back and I thought it would never happen again. If you leave now, who would join those pieces?
He was red-eyed now. She had never expressed her thoughts. She placed her forehead over his and said, “I don’t know how it really works, this love and all, but when you are with me, it seems everything will get better. It feels like it’d meant to be and if you leave…..” She just choked.
Shhh shhh, he held her face in his hands and said, I am sorry. I misunderstood. I should have asked you. I thought that maybe I wasn’t good enough for you. And while he tried explaining more, she kissed him.
In the past three months, he had not touched her because of her past. This was the first time they touched and that too she kissing him. She opened her eyes and said, you are and will always be the best for me. And they both smiled.
And that’s it, she said. Don’t you ever think of leaving me.
No, I won’t. No, I don’t believe you. Give me surety. What surety? He laughed. She went down on her knees and asked: Will you always be with me? A big smile came across his face. Yeah, but the ring won’t fit in my finger. And they both laughed out loud.
Well, who knew two imperfect souls could make such a perfection together.
